Cincinnati, OH—Beer isn’t anything new in Cincinnati. In fact, it’s one of the oldest industries in the Queen City. But due to circumstances like Prohibition, beer production in the city fell nearly silent for decades. But now a new generation of craft breweries have taken up the mantle and with a re-energized city supporting them, a new, vibrant chapter in Cincinnati’s beer history is being written.

This summer Artworks and the Brewery District—a team of brewers that have come together to promote Cincinnati’s brewing heritage—enlisted Keith Neltner of Neltner Small Batch to illustrate and design the first outdoor piece of art on the Brewery Trail, a mural on the side of the old Crown Brewing Company building at 131 East McMicken.

The mural depicts two workers crowning a pint of beer standing atop a proud beer line reminiscent of the late 1800s. Artworks employs young artists throughout the city each summer to create murals that add excitement to neighborhoods.

During this entire process director Brandon Faris of LEAPFrame partnered with Neltner to produce a short film titled “Art & Craft: A Tale of Beer & Brushes” which chronicles the creation of the mural, the makers of beer and art, and the exciting outlook these creative industries have for the city.

Breweries featured in the film include:

  • Braxton Brewing Co.
  • Christian Moerlein
  • MadTree Brewing
  • Rhinegiest

Over 300 people attended the Cincinnati film premiere hosted at the Moerlein brewery. Now the rest of the world will have a chance to discover Cincinnati’s brewery heritage on Thursday, Sept. 25 at noon EST when the film makes its online premiere on CraftBeer.com.
