Mare Island Brewing Co, in partnership with the USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization and the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation, presents: “USS Indianapolis: The Legacy” Film Celebration & Screening
Vallejo – On July 30, 1945, in the middle of the Pacific, a Japanese submarine sank the USS Indianapolis, which carried 1,196 men. Of those men, a mere 317 survived to tell the tale of five hellish days and nights stranded in the sea. With inadequate life rafts and vests, little food and no water, many men drowned because of wounds, exhaustion, dehydration or from ingesting oil from the slick on the water. Then, the sharks appeared…
The Mare Island Brewing Co, in partnership with the USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization and the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation, presents a special celebration and screening of “USS Indianapolis: The Legacy” at the Mare Island Museum. This incredible documentary feature film, compiled over 10 years and told by the survivors themselves, chronicles the amazing story of the USS Indianapolis and its fateful last journey after leaving its last port of call, the Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
“When we started the brewery, we already knew the heritage of Mare Island ran deep, but we are constantly uncovering more and more incredible aspects of Mare Island’s contribution to our nation’s history,” said Ryan Gibbons, co-founder (along with Kent Fortner) of the Mare Island Brewing Co. “The USS Indianapolis survivor’s group just called one day, explained that Mare Island was the last port of call of that famous ship, and Kent and I right away decided we’d make a ‘Survivor’s Tale Pale Ale’ in honor of the survivors; I even took a trip out to one of their survivors’ reunions in Indiana to unveil the beer to them. Fast forward a couple years, and this incredible documentary comes out, and we decided we had to put on a celebration screening of the movie right here on Mare Island. We can learn about—and pay homage to—this incredible historic event, as well as raise some money for the survivors’ scholarship fund and the museum here on the island. Plus, beer will be served!”
In attendance will be film director Sara Vladic, family of those lost at sea, as well as support crew members and actual survivors. All net proceeds benefit the USS Indianapolis/Gwinn “Angel” Scholarship Fund and the Mare Island Museum.
Date: April 4th and 5th. Doors open at 6pm for a no host beer/wine hour, the film starts at 7pm. Location: Mare Island Museum, 1100 Railroad Avenue, Vallejo, CA Tickets: $10 each. Available here.
