European Beer Star dealt Pelican Brewing Company a Full House today with two Golds and three Silver medals at the prestigious international beer competition in Nuremberg.
Pelican’s top-selling beer Kiwanda Cream Ale won the Gold medal in the English-style Golden Ale/Summer Ale category and Beak Breaker captured Gold for Imperial India Pale Ale. Kiwanda Cream has collected 47 medals in its lifetime, and Beak Breaker, new to the Pelican lineup last year, has earned four medals in its first year of production including a bronze last year at the 2016 European Beer Star Awards.
The brewery also took home three silver medals for MacPelican’s Wee Heavy Ale, Tsunami Stout and Captain of the Coast, a barrel-aged version of MacPelican’s Wee Heavy. “We are incredibly honored by all of these medals but a stand-out for us is that Captain of the Coast takes silver in this hyper-competitive field of barrel-aged strong beers—its a major win for Pelican. We’re eager to share the next batch this month.”
With record number of 2,151 beer entries from 46 countries the competition is one of the most sought-after prizes in the international brewing world making Pelican’s five notable awards all the more impressive. “The new record participation in the European Beer Star this year proves the high regard the prize enjoys in the international brewing world—and makes it even more difficult to place,“says Oliver Dawid, CEO of Private Brauereien Bayern, which has been organizing this competition since 2003.
“The European Beer Star is rapidly becoming one of the most competitive events in the whole international brewing scene—competition is greater than ever so to come back this year with even better results for our lineup is remarkable!“ said Darron Welch, founding brewmaster, Pelican Brewing Company. “We continue to celebrate the international popularity of our pre-Prohibition classic, Kiwanda—crafted with fresh Pacific NW ingredients—to take home top recognition from this prestigious German competion.“
The European Beer Star enjoys a prestigious international reputation with a strong jury of 133 experts, who assess the beers in a blind tasting according to the same purely sensory criteria as the consumer: color, smell, flavor, aromatic profile and overall impression. This year, the jury included master brewers, beer sommeliers and acknowledged beer connoisseurs from 26 countries. The European Beer Star Award is given to particularly authentic beers with lots of character, which impress the jury in terms of both flavour and quality and which best meet the criteria for the type of beer.
“We’ve been expanding our brewing capacity exponentially over the last couple of years so to be able to continue to improve on the quality of our beer and earn this coveted recognition feels great!“ said Jim Prinzing, CEO, Pelican Brewing Company.
Only one gold, one silver and one bronze medal were awarded in each of the different beer categories. The competition is aimed at breweries from around the world which feel committed to the traditional European style of brewing. “The European Beer Star has enabled us to again increase public awareness of the wide variety of great, hand-crafted beers,” says Oliver Dawid.
