You can say Golden Road Brewing has hit the big time after signing a contract with the giant warehouse club Costco. The Los Angeles-based brewery plans to expand their Southern California beer market by releasing 24-packs to 51 Southern California Costcos.
“I saw early on that there was this huge potential in craft beer—if you [have] a six-pack or 12-pack on the shelf at a supermarket, you need scale to succeed,” says Golden Road Co-founder Meg Gill. “So we set forth with a bit of a different model. L.A. county needs a local craft beer producer that you can get everywhere from Bill’s Liquor in Atwater, Sunset Beer Co., to Costco 24-packs—which are going into 51 Southern California Costco’s next month.”
From the beginning, Gill and Golden Road planned to build a large-scale production brewery in order to attract large retailers like Costco. This business plan follows Golden Road’s goal of creating a wide range of craft beers that reflect the way people live in the diverse and culturally-rich melting pot of Los Angeles.
Golden Road beers are available in cans with varieties such as the charitable Heal the Bay IPA (proceeds go to The Heal the Bay Foundation that protects Southern California waterways), as well as the Cabrillo Kolsch and The Get Up Offa That Brown.
For now, Golden Road is only distributing in California in order to keep the beer, “fresh, and local first,” according to Gill. Look for Golden Road cans in Southern California Costcos and other retail stores starting next month.
Thomas Appel’s love for craft beer began after visiting a micro brewery at the end of the world in the Chilean Patagonia. He currently lives in the center of the beer world in Boulder, Colorado, where he is the intern for the craft beer program and a recent graduate from the University of Colorado. A native of the Sunshine State, Thomas can be found enjoying craft beer while getting lost on the beautiful rivers of Colorado!
