I admit I haven’t watched “Jeopardy!” in ages. Unless the categories are songs by the Monkees, Beatles, and Springsteen, or the Detroit Tigers roster during the 1990s, I’m not your go-to for trivia night.
But I think all us beer geeks would have nailed a category on Jeopardy’s May 22, 2017, episode: Beers by State.

The beer category appeared during the gameshow’s first round, where the questions are worth $200, $400, $600, $800 and $1000. Other categories that round included DGA Feature Film Award Winners and the Bold and the Beautiful. (Don’t worry, I would have failed both too.)
I found all five questions on J-Archive, the Jeopardy! enthusiast blog that archives every question of every episode.
Let’s quiz you and see if you get them all correct.

Are You Smarter Than a Jeopardy Contestant?
Before we begin, a quick Jeopardy refresher: Remember, host Alex Trebek reads the answers on the board and contestants must provide the response in the form of a question: “What is _____, Alex?”
Here were the answers on the board:
- $200: Samuel Adams
- $400: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
- $600: Jai Alai IPA
- $800: Yuengling
- $1000: Shiner Bock
Are you ready with your answers/questions? Let’s see how many you got right.
- $200: Samuel Adams | What is Massachusetts?
- $400: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale | What is California?
- $600: Jai Alai IPA | What is Florida?
- $800: Yuengling | What is Pennsylvania?
- $1000: Shiner Bock | What is Texas?
Florida-based Cigar City Brewing is super psyched about its appearance on the gameshow. You can see the video on the brewery’s Facebook page.

The Jai Alai IPA question stumped a lot of Jeopardy! fans on JBoard.tv, another fan site (my research for this story was very serious, you guys), but it didn’t stump contestant Justin Braddock, a power engineer from Chattanooga, Tennessee. Justin correctly answered that Jai Alai IPA was from Florida, adding $600 to his name early in the game.
We wonder if Cigar City is working on a special delivery for Justin …
I guess I can add beer to my random trivia knowledge specialties. But please don’t ever look to me for answers about Russian Culture and 19th Century Congressmen — two categories that appeared later on the show.
