The Tivoli building is a landmark in Denver and has an interesting past steeped in American beer history. The building, built in 1864 by Mortiz Sigi and originally called The Colorado Brewery, has served many purposes over the last 141 years.
After Mortiz Sigi’s untimely death in horse carriage accident, the brewery was bought and re-named Milwaukee Brewery. In 1901 the brewery changed hands again and was called Tivoli-Union Brewery. Tivoli-Union Brewery grew to be one of the largest producers of beer in the country until its demise in 1965 due to a devastating flood and employee strike.
Today, the Tivoli building serves as the student union and office building for the Auraria Campus, which is home to a number of colleges and universities.
In collaboration with Metro State University’s Hospitality Tourism and Events, Tivoli Brewing Company will reopen its doors as a brewing facility in its original historic location after over 40 years. The University will be working with the brewery to establish classes for students interested in careers in the beer industry and have two new bachelor programs in brewpub operation and commercial brewing.
The rise of accredited brewing education is something that is happening across the country. In addition to the Certified Cicerone® program and numerous other online courses, there are now a number of state colleges and universities offering classes that pertain to the beverage industry.
For many, beer is a hobby and casually reading books and visiting local producers is enough to satisfy their thirst for the beverage. For others, working in the craft beer industry becomes a career path.
Luckily for today’s students there are now hundreds of ways to formalize your education in the beer industry. Brewing education is nothing new, but the recent boom in the craft beer industry has led many major higher education establishments to create these programs specifically for this revolution.
There are schools and online courses that are offering programs ranging from brewery industry welding and fermentation science to malting and beverage business. These courses offer many different certifications and degrees that relate to many different aspects of the beer business.
