While the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, California, wasn’t damaged in the Camp Fire, the fire scorched neighborhoods where many of the brewery’s employees lived. In a powerful letter, founder Ken Grossman announced a nationwide relief effort and invited other breweries to join the cause.

The Camp Fire has taken more than 75 lives as of Monday, Nov. 19.

“The scope of the disaster is hard to fathom, but we have been flooded with offers of help from all over the country,” Grossman said in his letter. In that letter, he puts out a call, asking other breweries to join him in brewing Resilience IPA, a beer in which 100 percent of the proceeds will go to help fire victims. I’m writing to ask you to participate in a nation-wide fundraising effort to support impacted communities. Sierra Nevada has created a beer called Resilience IPA. We’re inviting you to brew a version at your brewery and sell it at it your Pub or Taproom, with 100% of the proceeds going to support those impacted by the Camp Fire.
If you join us, we’ll give you the recipe, tap handles, coasters, posters, a social media kit and recognition for your support. We’re also working with many malt and hop suppliers to provide or reimburse participating breweries for the cost of the raw materials.
The brewery will begin brewing Resilience IPA Nov. 27, a few days after Thanksgiving on Giving Tuesday. The quicker they can get it in taprooms, the quicker the funds can start coming back to the community.
“Our hope is to get Resilience IPA in taprooms all over the country to create a solid start for our community’s future,” Grossman says in a Facebook post late Friday night, which has been shared 24,000 times as of Monday morning.
Beyond purchasing Resilience IPA when it’s released in a few weeks, you can further help Sierra Nevada’s fundraising efforts by donating to the brewery’s Sierra Nevada Camp Fire Relief fund. Money collected will be redistributed to partner organizations that are dedicated to rebuilding and supporting the community.
