Brewery Ommegang’s (Cooperstown, N.Y.) newest beer in their Game of Thrones collaboration series with HBO will be hitting shelves on Wednesday, Oct. 1. For the first time, the name and style of this beer was chosen through an online Facebook poll. The name, Valar Morghulis, means “all men must die” in high Valyrian, one of the languages spoken on the show.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last four years, you’ve probably heard of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones. The show, which is based off of a series of books by George RR Martin, is set in medieval times. The story is full of kings and epic sword fights, but there’s also a twist to this ancient tale. Not only are the characters faced with wars against people in distant villages and other family houses, but also a war against the unknown. This series mashes together historical fiction, fantasy, politics, dragons, and incredibly smart wordplay, which is what makes it appealing for just about everyone!
Fans of the series love all things Game of Thrones, and for good reason. Although the bottle has become sort of a collector’s item, the beer itself is something that is sought after as well. Brewery Ommegang is known for their Belgian-style ales, so this rich Abbey dubbel will most likely fly off the shelves as quickly as the others have.
Past Game of Thrones Collaboration Beers:
- Iron Throne (blonde ale)
- Take the Black Stout (Belgian-syle dark ale)
- Fire and Blood (red ale)
