SEATTLE — Figurehead Brewing Company, a craft brewery in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood, recently celebrated its three-year anniversary. To mark the occasion, founders Bob Monroe, Jesse Duncan and Jesse Warner have shared their story in a piece by Holly Regan, published today on the Washington Beer Blog.
Bucking the area trend of a hop-focused tap list, the brewery focuses primarily on English and Belgian beer styles that feature a more malt-centric profile, restrained bitterness and flavorful yeasts. According to Monroe, the small but growing operation has built a strong, loyal community in a short amount of time.
“That’s been the most rewarding thing about this whole experience: the community that we’ve found,” says Monroe. “We’ve got tons of regulars who … support us in all kinds of ways other than just buying beer.”
Going forward, they’re hoping to raise awareness and increase the presence of their brewery and its time-honored beer styles within Seattle’s thriving craft beverage scene.
“We’re trying to start a new trend … called ‘beer that tastes like beer,’” Duncan says. “We opened the brewery with the hope that people would acquire a taste for 5-6% [ABV] ales that have a lot of flavor, but [aren’t] over the top, so you can drink several.”
“Some of these styles have been around for hundreds of years,” adds Monroe, who is also head brewer. “I feel like they just stood the test of time for a reason.”
To this end, Monroe hosts a biannual beer-education class at the brewery to help people learn more about the science of brewing, recipe creation and the traditionally influenced brews Figurehead creates. The fall session is beginning on the first Tuesday of October.
In today’s profile piece, the founders share more about how they got started, their vision and values and what the future holds. Monroe also talks about turning personal hardship into motivation for helping Figurehead grow.
