BALTIMORE, MD – On Saturday November 2, 2013, State Comptroller Peter Franchot awarded the Comptroller’s Cup for “Best in Show: Best Beer in Maryland” to Brewmaster Eric Gleason of Growlers Brew Pub in Gaithersburg Maryland.
The award was presented during the Brewers Association of Maryland’s (BAM) Harvest Festival at the Meyerhoff Center in Baltimore attended by several hundred craft beer fans and served by over 20 of Maryland’s popular breweries, and an assortment of local eclectic food providers. It was Gleason’s first professional competition since becoming Growlers’ Head Brewer in November of 2012.
Yorkshire Porter was judged Best Beer in Maryland by a panel of seasoned experts from among 195 entries in 13 style categories submitted from 25 breweries. The winning beer was also awarded a gold medal in the Porter/Brown Ale Category. Additional medals awarded to Growlers were a gold medal for Freaky Krieky, a lambic, and a bronze medal for Broken Shovel Stout. During the awards, Mr. Franchot emphasized the importance of Maryland’s craft beer industry to the economy of the state and offered words of encouragement to all participants to “keep up the good work like Eric at Growlers Brew Pub.”
The festival’s purpose was to raise funds to support the legislative efforts of BAM, and showcase the excellent craft beer being brewed by its members in the State. Brewers and food providers were encouraged to use locally-sourced ingredients wherever possible, and presented a variety of creative offerings made from state-produced agricultural products and seafood. The winning brewery was also serving seven beers from its Harvest Series brewed with local hops, pumpkins, apples, or other fruits with names like Your Mom’s Apple Pie Ale, Homestead’s Maple Pumpkin Porter, Hopsticks Rye IPA, and Chesapeake Old Bay Ale.
