Orlando, FL — Eight Central Florida breweries took home ten awards at this month’s annual Best Florida Beer Professional Championship, an established statewide contest known for being Florida’s most prestigious professional beer competition.
Gold medals were awarded to beers by Broken Strings Brewery, Tactical Brewing Company, and Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company. All three microbreweries are located inside Orlando city limits.
Broken Strings Brewery is a downtown Orlando staple close to the OCSC stadium and their flagship beer, a black IPA named Liquid Vinyl, won a gold medal in the American Style Black/Brown Ale category. Liquid Vinyl also won the competition’s special award of Honorable Mention for Best of Show. Tactical Brewing Company, a new brewery in Orlando’s Baldwin Park neighborhood, took gold in the International Style Lager category for their Base Lager, while Ivanhoe Park Brewing’s Tupac ShaPorter won gold in the Baltic Porter category.
Silver medals were awarded to beers by Sanford’s Deviant Wolfe Brewing, Longwood’s Hourglass Brewing, and Casselberry’s Bowigens Beer Company. Crooked Can Brewing Company in Winter Garden won a bronze in the Imperial IPA category while Central28 Beer Co. in DeBary walked away with two bronze medal-winning brews.
The Best Florida Beer Championship is a beer, mead, and cider competition sanctioned by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) and the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The Best Florida Beer Championship encourages and recognizes the brewing of outstanding beer in the State of Florida.
In recent years Florida’s local beer scene has exploded, and the Orlando area is no exception. Five years ago there were few beer producers in Central Florida, now there are over 30 breweries in operation with more working to open.
