$2,000 in Prizes and Cash Up for Grabs at Delaware Homebrew Championship October 11

Hop to it and get your beer recipes in order! Entries are now being accepted for the Second Annual Delaware Homebrew Championship to be judged during the Delaware Wine and Beer Festival on Saturday, October 11 at the Delaware Agricultural Museum & Village in Dover from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

The event is an American Homebrewers Association sanctioned competition, meaning the champion brewer will be chosen by Beer Judge Certified Program (BJCP) judges. The team of certified judges will select the Delaware Homebrew Champion (first place) and second place winners. The first place winner will receive $1,000 in prizes and cash including a full-day “brewternship” at Fordham & Dominion Brewery; a two-night lodging package at MainStay Suites; a private tour, t-shirt and growler from Mispillion River Brewing; as well as cash and other prizes. Second place winner will receive a two-night lodging package at MainStay Suites and cash and prizes valued at $500. Top winners in each of the five brewing categories will receive medallions from the judges and trophies from the VIP voters.

The five categories will include: IPA (American/Imperial); American Ale (Pale, Amber, and Brown); Delaware-Grown Fruit Beer; Belgian/French Ale; and Specialty.

Competitors are required to deliver their beer (minimum of six bottles) to the Festival between 9-10 a.m. on Saturday, October 11. Competitors may also purchase a festival ticket with five tastings for an additional $10.

“We had an outstanding selection of entries last year,” said Charles Gray, Director of Sales at Kent County Tourism who is coordinating the competition.” “For 2014, we’ve dramatically increased the first and second place awards, so we anticipate more entries.” This year’s competition will be limited to 50 entries on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Featuring all of Delaware’s breweries, wineries and distilleries, the fifth annual Delaware Wine and Beer Festival is the original, official and only national award winning festival of its type in Delaware.

The theme is “Drink Local, Eat Local and Buy Local,” and will feature select Delaware restaurants serving seafood, barbecue and gourmet sandwiches; 40 Delaware artists and artisans just in time for tax-free holiday shopping, keg tossing competition and two live bands.
